Hailed by the Commercial Appeal as a “teenage virtuoso,” Basil Alter is a violinist in Memphis, Tennessee. He began violin lessons from his mother at the age of 3. Shortly after moving to Memphis he began studies with Joy Wiener, Concertmaster Emeritus of the Memphis Symphony. His European debut came at age 17 in Cremona, Italy and since he has performed across the continent. Recent engagements include solo recitals in Belgium and performances as soloist with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra (APO). He has been highlighted in the University of Memphis Magazine, WKNO FM’s Checking on the Arts, and various other publications across the country and abroad. He is also known for his work in jazz, performing alongside artist including Branford Marsalis, Joyce Cobb and Steve Lee. Outside of violin, he is also a sought after composer and arranger, and has had his compositions played across the city by the 901 Jazz Band, the Contemporary Chamber Players and others. Upcoming performances include solo recital tours through the USA and an upcoming exhibition of his own compositions. He is a violin student of Albert Markov at Manhattan School of Music and a composition student of Kamran Ince.
